Clinton County Attracts Crowd At Observatory

The moonlit and star-studded skies Saturday night attracted people for all over.

Prairie Grass Observatory was filled with people from the Purdue Astronomy Class, Buck Creek, Lafayette, students from Budapest and Mumbai, Brookston, Indianpolis, Westfield, Kirklin and Frankfort.  This is from a quick sample of the homes of the stargazing crowd of 130 people who showed up Saturday Night at the Prairie Grass Observatory Open House.

Saturn, The Moon, Mars, Jupiter, Venus and many other celestial gems pleased young and old alike as 6 stations kept people engaged as they saw moon craters, rings of Saturn, Moons of Jupiter, polar ice caps of Mars.  It was a jaw dropping evening to peer out to the heavens using the powerful telescopes at Camp Cullom’s Prairie Grass Observatory.

New Dome installation now being used at Prairie Grass Observatory. This summer is the first season the new dome has been used at Prairie Grass Observatory at Camp Cullom. The structure cost $23,000 and took several volunteers to install under the supervision of Andy Schilling, Camp Cullom V.P. and trustee at the observatory.

One of the Telescopes at Prarie Grass Observatory is the fourth largest telescope in the State of Indiana, the 28 inch Sky Master computerized scope capable of viewing extreamly faint images hundreds of trillions of miles away.

The next opportunity to enjoy an openhouse at the Observatory is on October 13th at 8:00 PM.  For more information about Prairie Grass Observatory, go to www.indianastars.com.
