Frankfort Mayor’s Luncheon for Scouting Raises $12,115

Frankfort Mayor Chris McBarnes and the Crossroads Of America Sugar Creek District hosted the annual “Stronger with Scouting” Mayor’s Luncheon at St. Mathew United Methodist Church fellowship hall at noon Thursday.

The luncheon was the 8th for Mayor Chris McBarnes. The purpose of the Luncheon is to communicate the key elements of the Scouting program to community leaders and raise funds to help fulfill the Scouting mission in Clinton County.

About 100 scouts and community leaders attended the pulled pork luncheon catered by Shoup’s. $12,115 was raised to help with Scouting Campership funds, administrative and field work, volunteer training and support activities and other Scouting efforts.

Scouting in Clinton County serves almost 100 youth and 36 volunteers. Last year 2 Clinton County Scouts earned the rank of Eagle, Scouting’s highest honor.  Over 288 hours of community service in Clinton County were logged by the Scouting programs in Clinton County.

Several Scouting projects have been completed by area Boy Scouts, including the design and construction of the popular Disc Golf Course at Camp Cullom, Fireplace construction at Camp Cullom, entrance check-in stand at Camp Cullom and at least 5 Eagle Scout projects at Prairie Grass Observatory.  Observatory Eagle Scout projects include planting of the 110 arborvitae trees around the Observatory, construction of 2 cement telescope pads, construction of the Observatory Sundial, and planning and construction of the Galileo Gallery Observatory seating area with lean-back benches to observe the stars on Open House nights at the Observatory.

Clinton County over the years has several footprints of other Community Scout projects from Eagle Scouts such as the Shuffelboard court construction at TPA park, model train set renovation at the Clinton County Museum at Old Stoney and other projects.

Mayor Chris McBarnes interviewed Scouts at the Luncheon and shared the importance of “Brain Power, People Power, Heart Power and Giving Power” to help build communities through a strong Scouting program.

Dana Harrison receives the first Buzz Hoehn award. Dana was recognized Thursday for his life-long devotion to Scouting in Clinton County. Dana’s award was named after Howard “Buzz” Hoehn who died February 6, 2019. Buzz not only earned the rank of Eagle at age 17 but served in WW2 and came to Clinton County in 1953 as District Boy Scout Executive in Clinton and Boone Counties.  Buzz continued to be extremely active in the Clinton County community until his death at age 98.
