Indiana State Police Warn of Rise in Stolen Vehicles Being Sold Online

The Indiana State Police Auto Theft Unit is alerting the public to a growing trend involving stolen vehicles being listed for sale on online marketplaces such as Facebook Marketplace.

Officials say many of these listings appear to be legitimate deals, but are often “too good to be true,” with criminals using increasingly sophisticated methods to disguise stolen vehicles.

According to investigators, two common tactics are being used:

1. Cloned VINs: A valid vehicle identification number from a legitimate vehicle is copied and placed onto a stolen vehicle.
2. Counterfeit VINs: A completely fabricated VIN is created to make a stolen vehicle appear legitimate.

Authorities urge buyers to watch for several warning signs when purchasing a vehicle online, including prices significantly below market value, sellers who demand cash-only payments, or individuals who refuse to provide identification.

Other red flags include titles that do not match the seller, out-of-state paperwork inconsistencies, or sellers who insist on meeting in random parking lots or poorly lit areas. Officials also caution buyers about situations where sellers attempt to rush transactions or avoid inspection tools such as OBD2 scanners.

Suspicious VIN characteristics — such as signs of alteration, uneven placement, or partial obstruction — may also indicate a fraudulent listing. Investigators additionally note that unusual engine or powertrain claims that do not match the vehicle model may signal a scam.

To protect against fraud, officials recommend meeting sellers at police stations when possible, using free VIN verification tools such as the NICB VINCheck or the NHTSA VIN Decoder, and carefully reviewing all documentation before completing a purchase.

Buyers are also encouraged to ask for identification, photograph license plates, and take time to fully inspect the vehicle without pressure.

Authorities say Indiana residents have previously fallen victim to scams involving altered or fake VINs, resulting in financial loss and legal complications.
