Troopers from the Indiana State Police are investigating a fatal crash that claimed the life of an Indianapolis man. Shortly after 1:30 this afternoon emergency crews were called to a serious two vehicle crash on I-70 westbound at the 76.1 mile marker, near Holt Road. Upon arrival, responders found the driver of a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado severely entrapped inside the truck and unconscious.
The Wayne Township Fire Department work hastily to extricate and treat the patient however the driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. That driver is identified as 33 year old Dustin McCoy. The driver of the second vehicle, a white 2018 Chevrolet Silverado, was seriously injured, he was identified as 25 year old Zachary Willis of Indianapolis. Willis was transported to Eskenazi Hospital in stable condition.
Investigators believe the white Chevrolet, equipped with emergency lighting, was parked along the left shoulder of I-70 and Willis was outside the truck performing maintenance on a road sign. After the work was complete and seconds after Willis got back into the truck, the red Chevrolet veered off the roadway and struck the rear end of the white pick-up. The impact caused extensive damage to both vehicles. A crash reconstructionist was called to the scene to assist with the investigation. At this time the reason McCoy left the roadway is unknown, an autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow at the Marion County Coroner’s Office.
This is an ongoing investigation and there is no further information to release at this time. Several lanes in both directions were restricted for the duration of the investigation and clean-up. All lanes were opened just before 4 p.m.
