The Lafayette Symphony Orchestra (LSO) will close its milestone 75th Mainstage Series with a vibrant and thought-provoking concert exploring the question: What makes music “American”? Through joyful rhythms, rich melodies, and a fusion of global influences, this program highlights the diverse voices and traditions that shape the American sound.

A unique feature of this season finale will be a guided listening experience led by Conductor and Artistic Director Kellen Gray. In the first half of the program, Maestro Gray will take audiences on an engaging “tour” of Sergei Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances, offering insight into the themes, structure, and cultural influences behind the work. In the second half, the orchestra will perform the piece in its entirety, allowing audiences to experience the music with a deeper understanding and appreciation.

Written during Rachmaninov’s time in the United States, Symphonic Dances blends his Russian roots with subtle hints of American jazz—demonstrating how music can cross cultures and tell many stories at once.

Patrons who arrive early will be treated to a special pre-concert performance by the Lafayette Flute Choir, adding an extra layer of celebration to this exciting finale.

“This concert not only marks the end of our 75th season, but also reflects the spirit of connection and cultural exchange that defines orchestral music today,” says Maestro Gray.

Join the LSO for an unforgettable evening honoring 75 years of music-making and looking ahead to an exciting future.

The LSO gratefully acknowledges concert sponsor Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette for their generous support.
