Pack 338 Pinewood Derby A Full Throttle Adventure For All

Story contributor : Kyle Shaffer

Saturday morning, Cub Scout Pack 338 held their annual Pinewood Derby at the Frankfort Moose Lodge.

There was a total of 25 cars with 12 of them belonging to scouts. The other 13 were registered in either the Adult or Sibling categories. Each car registered had to pass inspection upon entry and meet the Pinewood Derby rules, which include a width of up to 2 3/4 inches, length up to 7 inches and weight not exceeding 5 ounces. Each car is made from a kit made up from a block of wood, nails for axles, and four wheels. It is then up to them how they want it to look and what shape it should have.

The event began like all Cub Scout meetings by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, the Scout Oath, and the Scout Law. The National Anthem was also played just like any other major sporting event.

Mayor Judy Sheets was in attendance to help judge the Best In Show category. That honor went to first time racer Rowen R for his car that he named “Muffin.”
The event was announced by the Cub master, Kyle Shaffer. Helping him with running the race was Hector Galvan, Dan Troyer, and Susan Galvan.

Lunch was provided by the Moose Lodge for everyone. A plaque was presented to Brad Stockberger, the Moose President in thanks for their service and for providing a venue for the Pack to host the derby.

After 25 heats on the 8 lane track, racing was finished and the times were tabulated. The top finishers were as follows:

Tigers
1st – Liam N
2nd – Rowen R

Bears
1 – Myles F
2 – Seth T
3 – Joseph R

Arrow of Light
1 – Jacob G
2 – Hadley S

Sibling category
1 – Alex G
2 – Jessica R
3 – Sam T

Adult
1 – Susan G
2 – Hector G
3 – Matt M

The Slowpoke award for the slowest car went to “Steve” the Pack 338 car which was voted on through weekly campaigns to determine things like paint job, wheel color, shape, and name.

All 12 scouts are invited to register for the District Pinewood Derby at Lebanon Middle School on April 23rd. This derby will be opened up to all Cub Scouts in the Five Creeks District and expected will be 200+ cars in attendance. Registration will cost $5.
