Eyes turned skyward Tuesday morning as excitement counted down to liftoff during one of the most anticipated events of the Rossville Consolidated School District Summer Child Care Program. Students experienced the thrill of science in action as local Boy Scouts led a model rocket launch that combined hands-on STEM learning with plenty of outdoor fun.
Long before the first rocket left the launch pad, students eagerly gathered to learn about the parts of a model rocket, the importance of safety, and the science that makes flight possible. Boy Scout volunteers explained how propulsion, aerodynamics, and recovery systems work together, giving students an opportunity to see classroom concepts come alive in a memorable way.
Then came the countdown.
“Five… Four… Three… Two… One… Liftoff!”

With a burst of smoke and a roar of excitement from the crowd, the first rocket soared hundreds of feet into the summer sky before deploying its brightly colored parachute and gently floating back to earth. Cheers erupted across the field as students raced to watch where it would land, eager to help recover the rocket for another launch.
Throughout the morning, students took turns assisting with launches, predicting how high each rocket might fly, and celebrating every successful mission. The activity encouraged teamwork, curiosity, and problem-solving while creating unforgettable memories for participants.
The rocket launch is one of many enrichment activities offered through Rossville’s Summer Child Care Program, which continues to provide students with opportunities that extend learning beyond the traditional classroom. Weekly adventures have included visits to local attractions, outdoor recreation, bowling, and other hands-on experiences designed to keep students active, engaged, and connected throughout the summer.
“This is exactly what summer learning should look like,” said Superintendent Dr. Jim Hanna. “Students are having fun while developing critical thinking skills, asking questions, working together, and discovering that science can be exciting. Experiences like today’s rocket launch inspire curiosity and show students that learning doesn’t stop when the school year ends.”
The event also highlighted the value of community partnerships, as members of the local Boy Scouts volunteered their time and expertise to introduce students to rocketry and STEM concepts in an engaging, age-appropriate setting. Their enthusiasm quickly became contagious, with many students already asking when they could build and launch rockets again.
As the final rocket drifted safely back to Earth and students applauded one last successful launch, it was clear the morning had accomplished more than sending model rockets skyward. It sparked imaginations, strengthened friendships, and reminded everyone that sometimes the best lessons begin with a simple countdown and a dream of reaching the sky.
For the students of Rossville’s Summer Child Care Program, it was another day of adventure, proving that this summer, the sky truly is not the limit.
