Learning came to life recently for 17 students enrolled in Rossville Consolidated School District’s Summer Child Care Program as they traveled to Fair Oaks Farms for a day filled with agriculture, exploration, and fun.

The field trip provided students with an opportunity to experience firsthand how modern farms operate while enjoying some of the most popular attractions at one of Indiana’s premier agricultural destinations.

Rossville’s Summer Child Care Program was established to provide students with engaging educational opportunities and enriching experiences throughout the summer months. The program offers a safe, structured environment where students can continue learning, build friendships, and participate in activities that extend beyond the traditional classroom.

Upon arriving at Fair Oaks Farms, students began their day with the Pig Adventure. Through interactive exhibits and guided experiences, students learned about pig farming, animal care, nutrition, and the technology used by today’s farmers to raise healthy livestock. The hands-on experience encouraged curiosity and provided students with a greater understanding of the agricultural industry.

Following lunch, the group continued their exploration with the Dairy Adventure. Students learned about dairy cows, modern milking practices, and the journey milk takes from the farm to consumers. Interactive exhibits highlighted how technology, sustainability, and animal care work together on today’s dairy farms.

While the group had hoped to visit the Birthing Barn, Fair Oaks staff informed them that no animals were available for viewing at that time. Nevertheless, students remained engaged and enthusiastic throughout the dairy experience, asking questions and eagerly participating in the exhibits.

After completing the educational portions of the day, students enjoyed some well-deserved recreation. The rock-climbing wall quickly became a favorite attraction as students challenged themselves to reach new heights. Equally popular was the Dairy Air jumping pillow, where laughter and friendly competition filled the afternoon.

Perhaps the most memorable part of the trip was not found in an exhibit or attraction, but in the behavior of the students themselves.

According to Summer Child Care Program Chaperone Gretchen Ford, Fair Oaks Farms staff members repeatedly complimented the Rossville students on their conduct throughout the day.

“We were told several times that our students were one of the most polite and well-behaved groups they had hosted in a long time,” Ford said.

Staff noted that Rossville students were respectful not only to Fair Oaks employees and chaperones but also to other visitors participating in the tours. They listened attentively, followed directions, practiced good manners, and demonstrated kindness to those around them.

Their behavior reflected the values of the Rossville Consolidated School District and left a positive impression on everyone they encountered.

As the day ended, students boarded the bus with plenty of stories to share. Some cited the Pig Adventure as their favorite part of the trip, while others enjoyed learning about dairy farming. Many agreed that the rock wall and Dairy Air jumping pillow provided some of the day’s most exciting moments.

The Fair Oaks Farms field trip perfectly exemplified the mission of Rossville’s Summer Child Care Program: creating meaningful opportunities for students to learn, explore, and grow while having fun in a safe and supportive environment.

For the 17 students who attended, the day was more than just a summer outing; it was an opportunity to experience agriculture firsthand, build friendships, and proudly represent Rossville Consolidated School District through their outstanding behavior and enthusiasm for learning.
