The Frankfort Community Public Library is excited to announce our Hubbard Artist in Residence Program this January, 2023. We are pleased to introduce artist, teacher, and illustrator, Amaris Orozco as our Hubbard Artist in Residence. The theme of Orozco’s Residency is Let’s Make a Children’s Book–A Community Art Project! She will lead monthly classes for all ages in which participants will create a children’s book inspired by Clinton County, from start to finish. From January through May, we will offer one class a month, as well as one Open Art Studio a month, that will focus on the project. The residency will conclude with an Art Exhibit in the Anna & Harlan Hubbard Gallery during the month of June. This exhibit will showcase the children’s book we create together (and maybe some character highlights as well)! A reception will be planned for the end of June, with more details to come. Classes are free and open to all ages and abilities, however children under the age of 8 need to be accompanied by an adult. It is encouraged, but not required, to attend every class. We are excited to have you join us when you can! Aspiring writers, illustrators, and Frankfort enthusiasts are all welcome to join us.
The first class, Let’s Write a Story, takes place on Thursday, January 19, 4-6 p.m. in the Art Room 204 in the Frankfort Community Public Library. We will come together to write a children’s story inspired by Frankfort and Clinton County that will be the source material for the next four months. We will also begin working on character development. We will then meet on Tuesday, January 24, 5-7 p.m. during Open Art Studio to continue our project. Participants may come and go as needed during Open Art Studio. All supplies are provided, but please bring your creativity and a smile! “When I was asked to do a collaborative project in the community, my mind jumped right to making a book. Creating art is a form of personal expression and so a collaborative art project would still need to be rooted in what matters to each participant. By nature, humans are storytellers and we think in narrative structures. Allowing individuals to come together and reflect on their personal perceptions to co-create a story about their community would be would be an effective way to highlight what defines the culture, history, and identity of Frankfort and Clinton County, while also including the creative aspects of generating illustrations.” – Amaris Orozco, Hubbard Artist in Residence 2023
Amaris Orozco was born and raised in Lafayette, Indiana. She earned a BFA in Drawing and Illustration with a minor in Art History from Herron School of Art and Design. Amaris worked as an Artist in Residence in the Frankfort Community from 2016-2020 at Ability Services, Inc. She has participated in the Friends of the Frankfort Library’s Annual Fine Art Exhibition & Sale as both an artist and a committee member.
