A man was charged with six felonies after Carroll County authorities were alerted to an alleged domestic disturbance where the suspect made a proclamation that he intended to commit “suicide by cop.”
On Oct. 30, Delphi Police Department officers were reportedly dispatched to North Arnold Street in reference to a domestic disturbance where officers on the scene were advised that the suspect, who was identified as Brendan Bell, was suicidal and wanted to commit “suicide by cop.”
Bell allegedly battered the victim, including dragging them down a hallway while a 3-year-old child attempted to intervene. Reports stated that Bell strangled the victim and threatened to kill the victim if the police were contacted.
The department reported that additional deputies from the Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene and attempted to beckon Bell out of the residence, and reports stated that Bell claimed to have a handgun and asked officers, “are you ready?” All available manpower at the department was reportedly dispatched to the scene to aid in diffusing the situation.
Officers reportedly deployed a less lethal weapon that utilizes bean bag rounds while another officer utilized his vehicle with a ballistic windshield to activate full flood scene lighting and make an announcement to Bell within the residence, ultimately leading to his apprehension by authorities.
Bell was reportedly taken into custody, threatening one of the officers while kicking the cage in the police vehicle during the transport to jail. Bell was reportedly combative on scene and at the Carroll County Jail, and reports showed that he remained combative as he was transported by Carroll County EMS to a hospital in Monticello for medical clearance. According to reports from the department, Bell remained combative as he was transported back to the jail following medical clearance.
“Once medically cleared, Brendan remained combative and was transported back to the Carroll County Jail,” the report reads. “During that transport, he advised our officer that he should say a prayer as Brendan was going to find him and kill him.”
The department reported that at least two officers were injured during the situation with one officer being placed on light duty pending physical therapy and further evaluation.
