Success has become an expectation for Rossville softball.
The Hornets have won four straight Regional titles and won the State Championship in 2024. Now they return most of their roster from last year’s team.
“The nice thing is this group has been together,” Rossville softball coach Chris Gorbett said. “We have nine returning and five new players, so what you see stats-wise, it’s still here. Yes, we did lose something in the circle (Avery Layton), and I wish her the best of luck at college. But I think this group understands what it takes to be productive and produce and be competitive.”

Layton, a freshman at Virginia Tech, was a key part of the Hornets’ success over the last four years.
Offensively, Rossville returns top hitters Addi Gorbett, Brielle Layton, Allie Elliott and Gracie McDonald.
Brielle Layton paced the team in batting average at .540, while Gorbett topped the team in hits at 50.
Offensive versatility has always been a key for the Hornets as they combine power and speed.
“This is probably the fastest team I’ve ever coached,” Gorbett said. “What really stinks is each one of these hitters are power hitters also. So to take the bat out of their hands and put them in a bunt position is going to be very difficult but also very valuable at times.”
Rossville is ranked No. 7 in 2A in the Softball Coaches Association of Indiana preseason poll. The Hornets will play a tough non-conference schedule that includes games against Harrison, Tri-County, McCutcheon and Lafayette Jefferson before getting into Hoosier Heartland play.
The Hoosier Heartland has consistently been a competitive conference in all sports, including softball.
“I’ve always said every time you make it out and advance in the state tournament, it’s because of the conference you play in,” Gorbett said. “They help you prepare for what’s next, and we’re in a very solid conference to do that, and I’m thankful that we do play some strong teams in our conference.”
The Hornets begin their season on April 4 against Pioneer. They start conference play against Clinton Central on April 21.
