The town of Kirklin was awarded a $600,000 grant from the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA) on Thursday. This grant is for drinking water system improvements as well as improve the town’s water treatment plant, water storage tank and distribution system.

The project is expected to start in January 2019, weather permitting, and is expected to be done by the end of 2019.

The project will give Kirklin new high efficiency well pumps as well as clean and rehab both wells. There will be three new steel pressure filters, a new sodium hypochlorite feed system, a new phosphate feed system, add restroom facilities, clean and replace interior wet coatings at the tower, clean and put new coatings on Waker tower exterior, replace ladders and add safety climb devices, replace 10 fire hydrants and valves, an extension along Adams Street and replace water maters and meter pits with radio read meters.

All of the old equipment will be removed.

“Rural communities are the next great economic frontier for our state, and it is vital they are receiving support to keep Indiana moving forward,” said Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch via a press release. “With these funds, local governments are able to complete various projects like improving their infrastructure, downtown revitalization and public facilities improvements.”
