As the winter weather continues in Northwest Central Indiana region, local first responders are harnessing their skills through training to ensure they are able to assist in dire circumstances resulting from wintery conditions.

The Lebanon Fire Department A shift trained on ice water rescue today, Jan. 8 as the conditions were perfect on the surface to simulate a person falling through the ice.

The department issued a reminder to the public that if they witness someone fall through the ice, they need to immediately call 911. The observer may then throw a rope or floatation device to the victim and remind the victim to remain calm and still as they find something to hold on to. Those who observe others that fell through ice should avoid, if possible, placing themselves in the same situation as the ice has already been compromised around the individual.

Ice generally needs to be five inches thick for someone to be safe on top of it, but certain spots may be weak without a visible distance from the surface of the ice.
