Mulberry Farms Recognized at the Statehouse

Two Mulberry family farms were recently recognized at the Statehouse for being in operation for 100 years or more, according to State Sen. Brian Buchanan (R-Lebanon) and State Rep. Don Lehe (R-Brookston).

The Skiles/Oliver Farm, in operation since 1908, received a Hoosier Homestead Centennial Award. The Rothenberger Farm, in operation since 1867, received Hoosier Homestead Centennial and Sesquicentennial awards.

“Driven, hard-working individuals are behind these successful farms,” Buchanan said. “This is a tough industry, but one Hoosiers highly value. I applaud these two families on this great accomplishment and thank them for their contribution to a strong agriculture environment in Indiana.”

“Family farms are an important part of small, rural communities like ours,” Lehe said. “From providing jobs to producing food for our state and country, the hard work of Hoosier farmers does not go unnoticed. We are incredibly grateful for our long-time farm families and their many years of service to our community and state.”

The Hoosier Homestead Award Program recognizes farms that have been owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or more.Families can qualify for the centennial, sesquicentennial or bicentennial award.

Each year, awards ceremonies are held in the spring and summer commemorating the achievements of farm families across the state. For more information on the Hoosier Homestead Award Program, visit www.in.gov/isda/2337.htm.
