Speakers Set for First Two Programs at Women’s Expo

The Frankfort Community Public Library is excited to host the Fourth Annual Frankfort Library Women’s Expo.  Our first program, #IamRemarkable  starts at 10 a.m. in the Elizabeth O’Rear Skanta Theatre.  In this workshop, you will develop the confidence to promote yourselves in both the workplace and your personal life, thereby breaking modesty norms and glass ceilings. This workshop is mainly for women already in the workforce.  It is encouraged that you bring a smartphone, tablet, or laptop.  Registration is required for this Women’s Expo program only. You may register online at myfcpl.org/calendar or over the phone at (765) 654-8746. Please register by March 6.

This program aims to:

  • Improve the motivation and self-promotion skills of women and underrepresented groups
  • Change social perceptions and refresh the conversation around self-promotion

The instructor for this workshop is Sherry Gick. She holds a Bachelor’s in Special Education from Purdue University, an advanced Master’s in Elementary Education from NC A&T, and a Master’s in Library Science from Indiana University. A former teacher-librarian with 20 years of experience with students K–12, Sherry is the Director of Innovative Learning for Five Star Technology Solutions.  She now enjoys working with teachers, leaders, and librarians across the state of Indiana and beyond on effective technology integration, STEM & computer science education, as well as Google applications and tools.

“From Beginner to Bestseller” at 11:30 p.m.

Our second speaker of the day is YA author, Annie Sullivan.  She will give her presentation, “From Beginner to Best Seller” at 11:30 a.m. in the Elizabeth O’Rear Skanta Theatre.  Annie Sullivan is the author of the young adult fantasy novels A Touch of Gold (HarperCollins, 2018) and Tiger Queen (HarperCollins, 2019). She grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana, and received her Master’s Degree in Creative Writing from Butler University. She loves fairytales, everything Jane Austen, and traveling.  Her wanderlust has taken her to every continent, where she’s walked on the Great Wall of China, found four-leaf clovers in Ireland, waddled with penguins in Antarctica, and cage-dived with great white sharks in South Africa.

Annie Sullivan talks about how she kept going after she was rejected by over 100 literary agents in order to finally achieve her dream of writing updated versions of fairytales where princesses aren’t damsels in distress but are the ones doing the saving. Annie discusses how what we read influences what we believe and who become. She also touches on how she hopes to inspire the next generation of women by providing them with strong female role models so that they can tackle the obstacles life throws at them after learning from the example of their favorite literary characters. Annie will stay to sign her books, which will also be available for purchase.

All programs are free and open to the public.  Please contact Jamie at [email protected] or call the library at (765) 654-8746 for any questions.  Additional information can be found at myfcpl.org/womens-expo/.
