Summertime Classic at the Frankfort Community Public Library

Frankfort Community Public Library invites the public to a vintage film experience with a screening of Bringing Up Baby at Summertime Classic. Bringing Up Baby is an honorary of the National Film Registry and the Online Film & Television Association. The American Film Institute also voted it among the Greatest Films of All Time.

Summertime Classic in Skanta Theatre will take place on Saturday, June 23, at 1:00 p.m. The event is free and all ages are welcome. Free popcorn and water will be served. Bringing Up Baby (Not Rated) was the winner of a voting series held on the FCPL Facebook. Other candidates were Citizen Kane, To Kill a Mocking Bird, and Gone with the Wind. Directed by Howard Hawk, Bringing Up Baby (1938) stars Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant. The film shares the story of an impulsive heiress, Susan Vance (Hepburn), who enlists the help of zoologist David (Grant) in transporting a wild leopard to the country. Both characters, hoping to win a $1,000,000 grant from Mrs. Carlton Random, are detoured by hilarious misadventures involving the leopard, “Baby”.

With spot-on continuous comedy, Baby was the first screwball comedy added to the National Film Registry. Now widely considered Howard Hawks finest work, it was initially a box office failure. Stars Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant remain among Hollywood’s most celebrated talents. Hepburn holds the record for most Oscars awarded to a woman (4 wins and 12 nominations). Cary Grant won the Honorary Award at the 1970 Academy Awards.  Both stars had impressive comedic talent and Baby finished behind schedule as filming paused constantly due to uncontrollable laughter on set. The movie features many groundbreaking moments including a progressive portrayal of unapologetically intelligent women, deviation from traditional gender roles, and it is the first film to use the term “gay” in reference homosexuality.
