Traffic Stop Leads to Arrest of Mishawaka Man

At approximately 5:20 p.m. Wednesday, a traffic stop by Indiana State Trooper Andrew Smith led to the arrest of David Albert Weaver, 36, Mishawaka. Weaver was incarcerated in the Miami County Jail to face criminal charges for possession of marijuana, possession of methamphetamine, possession of cocaine, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He also received citations for speeding and driving with a suspended operator’s license.

Trooper Smith initiated a traffic stop on a Lexus passenger car near Miami County Road 1350 North and U.S. 31, for allegedly traveling 72 miles per hour in a posted 60 miles per hour zone. Further investigation revealed the driver, identified as Weaver, had a suspended operator’s license. Also while speaking to Weaver, Smith noticed indicators that criminal activity might be afoot. Trooper Ben Reason and his narcotics detecting police dog, Cartoush, arrived to assist. Reason walked Cartoush around the Lexus, conducting a free air sniff of the vehicle. The dog gave an alert to the possible presence of illegal narcotics inside the Lexus.

During a subsequent search of the Lexus and Weaver, officers purportedly found prescription medication, marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia. Weaver was arrested and incarcerated in the Miami County Jail.
