Strong Winds and Severe Storm Threat Impact Central Indiana Today

Central Indiana residents are being urged to prepare for hazardous weather conditions today, as the National Weather Service warns of powerful winds and the potential for severe thunderstorms.

A Wind Advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, with sustained south winds between 15 and 30 mph and gusts reaching up to 50 mph. These gusts are expected to impact much of the region, including Carroll-Warren-Tippecanoe-Clinton-Howard-Fountain-Montgomery-Boone- Tipton-Hamilton.

Forecasters say the strong winds could blow around unsecured objects, knock down tree limbs, and cause isolated power outages. Drivers—especially those operating high-profile vehicles—are advised to use extra caution on area roadways.

Storms Expected Later Today
In addition to the wind, showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop late this afternoon and continue into the evening. Isolated showers may begin between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., with more widespread storms expected after 5 p.m.

Some of these storms could become strong to severe, with damaging winds as the primary threat, though other hazards cannot be ruled out. Rain chances increase to 90% tonight, with rainfall totals between a quarter and half an inch possible.

Ongoing Severe Weather Risk
The unsettled weather pattern is expected to persist beyond today. According to the National Weather Service Indianapolis, thunderstorm chances will continue through Saturday, with a risk of severe weather each day.

Additionally, periods of heavy rainfall could lead to localized flash flooding and worsen conditions on already elevated rivers. Gusty winds may return again on Saturday, potentially reaching advisory levels.
