Rossville Schools to Conduct Active Shooter Drill in Compliance with State Law

ROSSVILLE, Ind. — Rossville school officials have notified families that an active shooter drill will take place on Monday, April 27, 2026, as part of the district’s required safety preparedness efforts.

The drill is mandated under Indiana law, specifically Indiana Code § 20-34-3-20, which requires schools to conduct at least one “man-made disaster” drill each year. This includes an active shooter, or armed intruder, scenario to ensure students and staff are familiar with emergency procedures.

According to the announcement sent to the school community, the exercise will be limited in scope. It will consist solely of an announcement over the school’s public address system. Officials emphasized that there will be no use of props, no simulated threats, and no role-playing elements involving staff or students.

School administrators say the goal is to provide a calm and controlled opportunity to review safety protocols without causing unnecessary alarm. The district also noted that Student Services personnel will be available following the drill to support any students who may feel anxious or need to talk.

“These drills are an important part of our safety planning,” the notice stated, underscoring the district’s commitment to maintaining a secure and supportive environment for all students and staff.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to speak with their children ahead of time to help them understand the purpose of the drill and to address any concerns.

The district expressed appreciation for the community’s cooperation as it continues to prioritize student safety.
