Swimmer Disappears in Tippecanoe River Sunday Morning

Indiana Conservation Officers responded to a 911 call reporting a distressed swimmer Sunday morning in the Tippecanoe River in the area of Tecumseh Bend.

Just after 8 a.m., local residents heard a man yelling for help. They observed the man floating downstream as he yelled. Witnesses were unable to take any action prior to seeing him disappear below the surface.

Responding agencies conducted various shore and boat based searches. At this time the speed of the current, resulting from recent heavy rainfall, prevented the use of divers.

Indiana Conservation Officers will continue to patrol the area by boat and follow up on any leads related to any missing persons report.

Although not above flood stage, recent heavy rains have caused river levels to rise. This is the second moving water related response in 24 hours, in Carroll County. Higher water levels mean faster currents, which make swimming and boating more dangerous. The common swimming hole or floating creek changes drastically, which may not appear obvious to everyone, when the water rises. Do not underestimate the relentless power of moving water and always wear your life jacket.
