Traffic Stop Leads to Arrest of Peru Man

Thursday night, a traffic stop by Indiana State Police Trooper Chad Babbs led to the arrest of Anthony Shockey, 59, Peru.  Shockey was incarcerated in the Miami County Jail to face criminal charges for possession of methamphetamine, counterfeiting, and driving without ever having obtained an operator’s license.

At approximately 8:04 p.m., Trooper Babbs initiated a traffic stop, on a 2003 Chrysler passenger car, on northbound U.S. 31 near Miami County Road 1350 South. The Chrysler was stopped for having a false and fictitious license plate. As Trooper Babbs was speaking with the driver, later identified as Shockey, he observed indicators that criminal activity could be afoot. A Howard County Sheriff’s deputy, and his narcotic detecting police dog, arrived to assist. The police dog conducted a free air sniff around the Chrysler and indicated the presence of narcotics. During a subsequent search of Shockey, and the Chrysler, officers allegedly found methamphetamine. Further investigation revealed that Shockey was purportedly driving without ever having obtained an operator’s license.

Shockey was taken into custody and transported to the Miami County Jail. When Shockey was being booked into the jail, officers allegedly found 10 counterfeit one hundred-dollar bills on his person. Shockey was incarcerated to face criminal charges for possession of methamphetamine, counterfeiting, and driving without ever having obtained an operator’s license.
